Write for readers, not for search engines

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or get your blog updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

One thing that really annoys me is KSD (keyword spamming disorder). I very rarely make HATE POSTS, so I wanted to start off saying that I absolutely love BloggingZoom, but one of the founders (Vic) is a former blackhat search engine optimizer (nothing is wrong with that) and has a new blog over at BloggerUnleashed.com.

On his blog, he uses a lot of his former blackhat tactics to increase website traffic. The one that I have a problem with is that he blatantly spams keywords in all of his blog posts to raise his keyword authority on Google. With over 450 RSS subscribers, many of his readers that also blog are starting to follow his examples and are making spammy posts just to rank for keywords in Google. The last time I checked, the whole idea is to write for your readers, and not to annoy the living hell out of them, but if I am mistaken and you prefer to have a really annoying time reading my posts, that can be arranged. :)

Nearly every post is filled with bold keyword spam, but here are a few that stand out:
Make Money or Starve
Entrecard Sucks
Blogging for Money

A lot of readers are now following his example and are spamming keywords:
Entrecard Sucks
Entrecard Sucks

Now, if all of that blatant keyword spam wasn’t enough to make you unsubscribe from a blog, it gets worse. Many blogs that I come across are trying to rank for “Entrecard Sucks” on google, so in their posts they use the term as much as possible. This would make their readers tend to believe that they hate Entrecard, and yet most of these bloggers are running the widget on their blog… ironic much?

My word to all the keyword spammers:
If you care so much about search engine traffic for your blog, at least make a big notice at the top of the blog post stating “This is a useless post that was made only for Google to read, save yourself 5 minutes by clicking the back button on your browser and coming back to my blog when I have a meaningful post

Hah.. if only. I hope a ton of bloggers don’t join in on this craze, otherwise I might have to unsubscribe to a few blogs.

This entire post can be summed up in two sentences:
Write for readers, not for search engines. Everyone should focus on growing their authority by recommendations and referrals, not by artificially inflating Google at the cost of confusing and annoying your supporters.

Sarcastic Example of Keyword Stuffing:
Increase website traffic by reading this blog, oh wait you already knew that because you are looking to increase website traffic. Well to increase website traffic, make sure to subscribe to the rss feed if you want your traffic to increase. The terrible grammar used in this increase website traffic post was also on purpose as I see that is what the keyword spammers are doing to increase website traffic.

I do however support advertisers

Thanks for the link

It’s my fault. I got it started by asking a simple question on Vic’s blog about why I was ranking #1 for the term “EntreCard Sucks” when I hadn’t tried for that term in my Blogging Zoom vs. EntreCard post. Vic demo’ed his SEO skills, everybody else jumped in, and now I’m like at #30.

Thanks for the clarification. As long as it was just an experimental post, then I am glad to hear that it will not be a daily thing.

LMAO This is so funny. People have taken this to the next level. And Frank I am sorry I use that term as an example and took you so low on the SERPS now. I hope to not do something that stupid again and hurt a friend on his traffic.

“took you so low on the SERPS”?

I have never tried to rank for any keywords discussed in the post, the whole point of the article was to explain that if you are going to spam keywords every three words, at least make a notice stating that the post was meant solely for Google, as a lot of your visitors are making useless keyword spammed posts on the same topic, even when it is totally hypocritical to what they think.

[Not directed at you, but your readers]:
What is the point of ranking for “entrecard sucks” when you utilize the widget yourself?

Collin you seem to think you know a lot. How about if we do this. We do a small contest. We both buy a domain at 12am and by the same time the next day who ever has the most traffic wins? Now the rules is simple no BH and open topic. We use ESCROW.COM with a 10k wager.

If you are going to talk shit let’s see if you can back it up.

On your About you have:Learn the most heavily guarded and effective internet marketing tips today, for free.

LMAO let’s see if all the rehash bull you have on this crap site can really help you against some one who makes 10k a month from the net son.

You flip out and offer a 10k wager over a single blog post… I think you need to start taking your A.D.H.D. medicine again because you overreact and are extremely obnoxious.

This post has nothing to do with talking shit, it is about stating my opinion that you spam keywords in every post.

I recommend you go back to first grade to learn how to read and write English properly.

PS: I appreciate the hating blog post entirely about me, as well as your critiques on my about page… did you happen to forget that you wrote about wetting the bed and having a nervous breakdown on yours? Not much better in my opinion.

You have just lost all respect for me, it is a shame to see a good blogger named Courtney Tuttle work with you on website launches.

No use arguing on the internet, I am bound to run into more dumbasses like you eventually.

Ohh I see you decided to put the comment up again after I pasted a copy at Blogging Zoom. Again son all mouth and no balls like always it never fails, write the bull and no nuts or money to back it up with. What a loser. LMAO

Put the comment back up again? I did not delete any comment(s) as you are entitled to your own opinion.

Like I said, your English is terrible and you should definitely work on that. I make plenty of money online so I assume you are talking out of your ass. You are an obnoxious blogger who takes an originally non offensive post way too seriously.

Well son come on lets see how much money you make an easy bet, I can buy a domain in the morning and before change of date I have had 10k unique hits I am sure with all the crap you have in this site you can do the same. Come on son show me hos much money you make. Simple bet 10k we both deposit at escrow.com and the winner takes it home. Let me show you how a non English speaker takes you to cool. Come on what better way to establish credibility this should be your dream. Or is it you do not have the money? Or is it no nuts? Which is it.

Your problem is you though I would not call you out. And you would write your little post and act like you have something to teach your readers, LMAO.

But now I have called you out. Let me quote your perfect English.

“This is Collin LaHay’s internet marketing blog. I share the best internet marketing tips to increase website traffic and make money online. Learn the most heavily guarded and effective internet marketing tips today, for free!”

Come on son teach me! And in the process you make 10k. Do not wimp out with this is below me blah blah blah, come on son easy 10k with all that knowledge you carry. Or is it you have nothing but recycled ebook stuff?

You truly are pathetic. LMAO

Actually I was hoping you would call me out. As Neil Patel once said, talking shit does wonders. Other than expressing my opinion about blatant keyword spamming, what did you think the point of this post was? Talking shit builds traffic, so I thank you, and I am sure you will have a lot of success challenging random people you have never met on the internet over who can build traffic to a 24 hour site.

I know some people who write for the purpose to get good ranking for particular keywords in SERP. But I always know it is more important to read something that’s written for readers like us! It surely feel weird to read an article that keep on repeating a particular keywords all over the same article. It’s better to get readers loyalty than just good SERP but no loyalty.

why on earth are people bashing entrecard when they are using it themselves.

Comment by Frank C
2007-12-21 06:13:08

First of all, it’s good link bait, particularly for drive-by card droppers who can’t resist stopping to take a look.

Secondly, there are some weaknesses in the EntreCard system. While these aren’t as serious as those in BlogRush, they could, at some point, cause it to fail. Getting them out in the open and discussing them helps.

Collin, using bold text is not only for SEO purpose. Even in university essay we do use bold for keyword scanning.

I like your blog, but don’t really like your paragraphing because I always have to read word-by-word. In this era of web surfing we don’t have much time for reading like that.

In fact Google recommend to use italic and bold styleing for text in the webmaster guideline. So I don’t know why you would take it as an offense. However, I do agree that repeatedly bold a phrase throughout the article is not good.

Writing is not just for Google, it’s for readers too, so I recommend you start using H2, H3, H4, b, and i for your blog posts.

Even I don’t have the time and skills to advertise and design my blog, and my English sucks, but I still follow common standards in writing.

No, I’m not a friend of whoever blog you were writing about, so please don’t take me as offending you. I’m just writing my honest opinions about something I learned.

Regards.

I have absolutely nothing against using bold in a blog post, but that is very different from keyword spamming. When you use bold to help readers scan content faster, you are writing for readers, but when you bold words so google will give you more authority on that word you are writing for search engines.

Thanks for the in depth comment.

I find vic’s blog difficult to read sometimes. There are some unique things on his blog, but I usually peruse his material because I can’t really handle reading the whole thing. The whole keyword spam thing may be a valid technique, but I am not a fan.

If you noticed Vic used a lot of tactics to make money. Thats the bottom line people. If you have this blog to mmake buddies then thats your goal. If Vic has a blog to outrank you and show small time bloggers how to compete with bigger ones then thats fine too. You either choose to make money or not. Vic is merely showing people how to do this. Im sure you like reading his blog because its the truth, and he is telling people things that other bloggers are using but will never tell you about. So what if he cant write well. At least he admits it and thats good. I bet you follow so many other bloggers online that use the same techniques that Vic uses, but they will never tell you that they do. Don’t be ignorant. read and learn. Thats your choice if you would rather make a dime or 10,000 dimes.

When I see a blog that utilizes these tactics, I leave and I never come back–and I certainly never click their ads. I don’t know who would find value in spammy blackhat posts. I guess it’s people who want to replicate the same kind of posts in attempts to make money.

Doesn’t google figure it out after a while and harshly penalize the website? I wonder how long you can do that before your site gets “blacklisted”?

I hate going to blogs like that. While I don’t know a lot about the tech stuff I find it annoying when either A. there’s a whole lot of ads
b. too much payperpost (every other ppost come on now)
c. write for search engines (like you said nicely) the blog i came from was that guys blog. I did a google search about entrecard to see weather or not i should cancel my account, i came across his blog. Yeah don’t mind his trash talking! loser ……sellout is all i can say!
