I have removed a only one post when the owners politely emailed me asking to do so, however most of the time the websites enjoy the heaps of long term traffic, and don't do anything to change it. The one post I did remove deserved it though, because it was a university (.edu) with a high pagerank. While the link building was awesome from there, it was a forum built for little kids to do projects on and I agreed with the owners of the forum that they didn't deserve a bunch of webmasters making useless forum posts in return for links, so I politely removed the link.
