The Digg Effect Case Study

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or get your blog updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

My last post talking about the top 10 reasons this list will be popular on digg was not only popular, but it was a flagship Digg post for me. I knew the digg users would digg it up, but I had no idea it would receive over 5000 diggs. This post is going to be a case study showcasing the Digg effect on my server. The Digg effect is where an article is featured on the homepage on Digg.com and receives tens of thousands of visitors in a very short time period (a huge spike in traffic).

SocialMarker promotes rapid link building

If you are a webmaster like myself, you know that time is everything. I am pretty lazy when it comes to doing tedious work for little gain, so I tend to avoid a lot of small things that would probably help in the long run. I have just discovered a website called SocialMarker that aims to fill in that void. SocialMarker is a website that is basically a browser for submitting links to over 25 different social news and social bookmark websites.

Here’s what it does:

200+ links that will all be PR2-3+

For all of Mixed Market Art’s readers who are search engine optimizers or link builders… this post will surely help build your pagerank quickly and easily. I recently discovered a Linux site called the Linux Counter where they are tracking how many people are using Linux, where they are from, and a few other statistics. I was toying around with the site and signed myself up to be tracked. As a test, I signed up stating that I was located in Antarctica where only three other people had listed themselves to be shown publicly. There was no email verification to join and they even provided a search engine followed link to the URL I specified.  If you want to build hundreds of links you can submit yourself once to every country (205 countries at the moment). All of the aged pages are PR2-4, so if you spend a decent amount of time submitting your sites to the entire list, you can expect a great PR update for minimal work when Google starts doing their updates. This is a very quick, easy, and most importantly free method towards mass link promotion. I recommend that if you are going to be using this technique, try doing a few per day on a set schedule so that Google does not penalize your site for building tons of links one day, and then very few the next few days.

Blackhat SEO forums are free on Christmas

Update: Looks like its set to private now,  oh well!

The SEO Blackhat Forums which normally cost $100/month to see are now free during Christmas according to their most recent blog post. If you are into unethical blackhat search engine optimizing, you can go register for their forums and skim over everything before it locks again (sometime tonight) and begins charging $100/m again.

I would never pay $100/m to join a forum when I am sure the majority of the material is on other forums for free, but I will gladly sign up and browse when the getting is good! They did not say if the free registration ended exactly at midnight, all they said was “for the next couple hours,” so you best hurry if you want a sneak peak.

Get a free .edu blog

*Looks like the host nuked the blogs, so I now declare this post obsolete.*

I was originally planning on not even writing this… but here goes nothing. I get a lot of people to email me about getting a free blog post on my PR2 .edu blog. Today I stumbled upon yet another university that gives away blogs, but the difference is with this one anyone can register as many .edu domains blogs as they want.

Who else wants to make money with proxies?

As most of you already know, I have only been blogging for a little over a month but I have been developing websites and making money online for over a year. The first website I had ever developed was a web proxy. A web proxy allows you to bypass network firewalls and is commonly used to access websites that are normally restricted (like getting on myspace at school). I had a few ups and downs with my first proxy, but over the course of a few failures I learned a lot about how to build and market them effectively. My second attempt at making a web proxy was when I grabbed the keyword domain “unblock.cc” for a bargain at $30. Unblock Myspace was the most trafficked web proxy keyword at that time so I figured I would build a long term proxy for it. Things did not go entirely as planned, but in the course of two months I made $975.43 and then sold the website for $1300 (minus Escrow fees).

The idea behind the name

Recently a lot of people have been confused and asking why I used Mixed Market Arts as the name of my blog. I wanted to write this post to explain my reasoning just encase you have no idea what it means. The name is a word play off of the words “Mixed Martial Arts” which is a very popular combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used. For example, it is very common to see a kick boxer fighting in an arena against a master of karate or jujitsu. Many different forms of martial arts are used such as grappling and striking.

Write for readers, not for search engines

One thing that really annoys me is KSD (keyword spamming disorder). I very rarely make HATE POSTS, so I wanted to start off saying that I absolutely love BloggingZoom, but one of the founders (Vic) is a former blackhat search engine optimizer (nothing is wrong with that) and has a new blog over at BloggerUnleashed.com.
